New Delhi, September 16, 2023: In the wake of the Nipah Virus outbreak, India is facing a new wave of anxiety and concern. After successfully battling the COVID-19 pandemic, the country now grapples with a more ominous threat, the Nipah Virus. Medical authorities have sounded the alarm as cases of this deadly virus emerge, with warnings that it may pose an even greater danger than the coronavirus.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has issued a stark reminder that the Nipah Virus carries a staggering fatality rate, ranging between 40% to 70%. This is in stark contrast to the 2% to 3% fatality rate seen with COVID-19, making Nipah Virus potentially deadlier. As of now, six cases of Nipah Virus have been confirmed, and tragically, two lives have already been claimed by the virus.
In response to the growing concern, authorities in Kozhikode district have decided to close all educational institutions until September 24 as a precautionary measure. Dr. Rajeev Bahl, Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research, emphasized the urgency of the situation and outlined the steps necessary to curb the virus’s spread. He stressed the importance of frequent handwashing and mask-wearing, similar to COVID-19 precautions.
Dr. Bahl also underscored the significance of isolation, stating that it plays a crucial role in preventing the virus from spreading. If individuals develop symptoms, he advised them to self-isolate and seek medical attention promptly.
In a bid to combat the Nipah Virus, India has taken a proactive step by procuring 20 more doses of monoclonal antibodies from Australia. This move aims to strengthen the country’s arsenal against the virus. The Nipah Virus has been known to spread through infected fruit, bats, and close contact with infected animals or their body fluids, such as saliva or urine. Once it infects humans, it can easily transmit from one person to another, further complicating containment efforts.
The situation in Kozhikode district remains closely monitored, with a central team of experts working diligently to assess the situation and recommend solutions. Over a thousand people are currently under contact tracing, emphasizing the importance of swift and decisive action to prevent further outbreaks.
