RBI Extends Deadline for Exchanging Rs 2000 Notes to October 7

Last Chance for Holders of Rs 2000 Notes

India|September 30, 2023: In a move to accommodate individuals who have not yet exchanged their Rs 2000 notes, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has decided to extend the deadline for exchanging these notes until October 7, 2023. This extension comes as a relief for those who still possess the now-defunct currency.

The RBI had initially announced the withdrawal of Rs 2000 notes from circulation, prompting people to deposit them in banks starting from May 23. The original deadline for exchanging these notes was set for September 30. However, with many individuals yet to exchange their notes, the RBI has granted an additional week to ensure a smooth transition.

It’s important to note that once the deadline passes, Rs 2000 notes will cease to be legal tender. Consequently, it’s crucial for individuals still holding onto these notes to exchange them within the extended timeframe to avoid financial loss.

Several establishments, including shopping malls, gold shops, and temples, have stopped accepting Rs 2000 notes as a means of donation or payment. Therefore, it’s essential for individuals to exchange their notes at authorized bank branches.

The RBI has imposed certain regulations regarding the exchange of these notes. Individuals are permitted to exchange notes up to a total value of Rs 20,000 without providing additional documentation. However, if the exchange amount exceeds this limit, the individual must furnish their PAN card details to complete the transaction.

This extension is a final opportunity for those who have yet to exchange their Rs 2000 notes. With the new deadline of October 7, individuals are urged to act promptly to ensure a seamless transition before the notes become obsolete.
