BJP Mulls Fielding Veteran Leaders for Lok Sabha Elections in Maharashtra

BJP's strategic move to counter Mahavikas Aghadi's challenge in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections

Mumbai | September 30, 2023: With the Lok Sabha elections looming on the horizon, political parties in Maharashtra are gearing up for the electoral battle. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is eyeing a hat-trick of victories at the center and has launched “Mission 45 Plus” to achieve this goal. However, recent surveys indicate that the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is facing a formidable challenge from the Mahavikas Aghadi in the state.

In a surprising turn of events, the BJP appears to be contemplating a game-changing move by fielding some of its veteran leaders from the Legislative Assembly in the Lok Sabha elections. Although no official announcement has been made yet, speculation is rife about the party’s intentions to introduce new faces in several constituencies across the state, including Thane and Mumbai.

Names such as Rahul Narvekar, Sudhir Mungantiwar, Vinod Tawde, Ram Satpute, Girish Mahajan, Chandrasekhar Bawankule, Sanjay Kelkar, and Ravindra Chavan have surfaced in discussions regarding potential candidates. It is widely believed that this strategy is being employed by the BJP to ensure an equitable contest against the Mahavikas Aghadi, consisting of parties like Congress, Shiv Sena under Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray, and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) led by Sharad Pawar.

Insiders have disclosed the constituencies under consideration for these veteran leaders who currently serve as Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs). Rahul Narvekar, the incumbent Assembly Speaker, may contest from South Mumbai on a BJP ticket. Additionally, BJP’s national general secretary and former Maharashtra cabinet minister, Vinod Tawde, is being considered for a constituency in Mumbai. Chandrashekhar Bawankule, the BJP’s state president, may emerge as the party’s candidate from Wardha. Furthermore, Thane, a traditional stronghold of Shiv Sena, could witness a significant shift as the BJP contemplates fielding either Sanjay Kelkar or Ravindra Chavan.

If the BJP proceeds with this strategy and deploys its veteran leaders in the Lok Sabha elections, it is poised to intensify the challenge posed by the Mahavikas Aghadi. As the political landscape in Maharashtra continues to evolve, the state is bracing itself for intriguing political developments in the near future.
