Unseasonal Rains Wreak Havoc on Maharashtra Farmers; Baliraja’s Dam Bursts

Government Assures Support as Farmers Face Enormous Losses in Beed and Ahmednagar Districts

November 28, 2023: In a cruel twist of fate, unseasonal rains battered several parts of Maharashtra on the night of Monday, November 27, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. The farmers of Beed and Ahmednagar districts found themselves grappling with substantial losses as the unanticipated downpour wreaked havoc on their crops. To add to the woes, the symbolic dam of Baliraja’s tears burst open once again, reflecting the anguish of the farming community.

Amidst the chaos, Agriculture Minister Dhananjay Munde took to Twitter, extending his support to the beleaguered farmers. He acknowledged the widespread impact of the unseasonal rains and hailstorms, affecting thousands of hectares of agriculture across 16 to 17 districts. Rabi cotton, onions, grapes, bananas, mangoes, and pomegranates were among the crops severely hit, along with already harvested rice, sorghum, wheat, gram, and vegetables.

“The work of collecting objective information about the rains and the damage caused by agriculture, relief, and rehabilitation is underway,” stated Minister Munde. “It is the role of the government to stand firmly behind the farmers and provide assistance wherever they have suffered.”

Marathwada, in particular, bore the brunt of the unseasonal rain, with crops being decimated within a span of just twenty-four hours. The damage extended to the Rabi season, dealing a severe blow to the already distressed farming community. This setback comes on the heels of a challenging kharif season, where six districts faced crop failure due to insufficient rainfall, while two districts grappled with excess precipitation.

As Maharashtra’s farmers count their losses, the government assures its commitment to supporting them in this difficult time, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts to mitigate the impact of the unseasonal weather and pave the way for recovery.
