Ulhasnagar’s Kalani Family Hints at Alliance with Sharad Pawar’s NCP

Maharashtra | September 26, 2023: In a significant development that could reshape the political landscape of Ulhasnagar, the influential Kalani family, which has wielded substantial political influence in the city for the past five years, seems to be tilting towards aligning with Sharad Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). This potential shift in allegiance comes after a tumultuous year during which the Kalani family briefly returned to the NCP, then adopted a neutral stance amid the NCP’s internal divisions.

The Kalani family’s political resurgence has sent ripples through Ulhasnagar’s political scene, which is currently dominated by the Shiv Sena-BJP coalition. Despite this coalition’s control over the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation, the Kalani family’s charisma and strong Sindhi community ties have enabled them to maintain their prominence in local politics. Notably, the Kalani family’s candidates have won several assembly elections in recent years, often giving fierce competition to the BJP’s candidates.

Over the past half-decade, the Kalani group had undergone political shifts, initially siding with the NCP to secure the mayor’s position with BJP support. However, tensions between the BJP and the Kalani group led to a separation, and the group then backed the Shiv Sena, resulting in a Shiv Sena mayor taking office. Subsequently, during a period of administrative rule, the Kalani family appeared to lean towards the Nationalist Congress Party. Jayant Patil and Jitendra Awad, prominent NCP leaders, visited the residence of the Kalani family and successfully worked to bring them back into the NCP fold.

However, the NCP itself faced internal divisions, leading to conflicting signals from the Kalani group. Some members attended the swearing-in ceremony of Ajit Pawar, while others participated in Sharad Pawar’s meetings. This ambivalence led many to believe that the Kalani group was adopting a neutral stance. Nonetheless, recent developments, including reports of continued contact between the Kalani group and NCP leaders Jayant Patil and Jitendra Awad, as well as Pappu alias Suresh Kalani’s historical ties with Sharad Pawar, have fueled speculation that the Kalani family is gravitating towards Sharad Pawar’s NCP.

In a significant show of interest, Rohit Pawar, a prominent NCP youth leader, visited the Kalani family’s residence during the Ganeshotsav festival, sparking rumors of a possible alliance. With such developments in the air, the political circles in Ulhasnagar are abuzz with discussions about the Kalani group’s potential alignment with Sharad Pawar’s NCP in the upcoming elections. As the political chessboard continues to evolve, the Kalani family’s decision may prove to be a game-changer for the city’s political landscape.
