Supreme Court Cancels Gujarat Government’s Amnesty in Bilkis Bano Case

11 Convicts Ordered to Surrender Within 2 Weeks

January 08, 2024 : In a significant development, the Supreme Court has revoked the Gujarat government’s decision to grant amnesty to 11 convicts involved in the gang rape and murder of Bilkis Bano during the Gujarat riots. The court has ordered all 11 convicts to surrender before jail authorities within the next two weeks. This decision has sparked widespread reactions across the nation.

The bench comprising BV Nagaratna and Nya Ujjwal Bhuiya delivered this verdict today, emphasizing that punishment serves as a deterrent to crimes and acknowledging the suffering endured by the victim, Bilkis Bano. The court further asserted that the Gujarat government does not possess the authority to unilaterally waive punishments in such cases.
