Supreme Court to Rule on NCP Symbol Dispute

Ajit Pawar's Fate Hangs in Balance as Supreme Court Resumes Hearing

March 19, 2024: In a pivotal turn of events, the Supreme Court is set to resume hearing the case regarding the dispute over the party symbol between factions led by Ajit Pawar and Sharad Pawar within the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). The ongoing legal battle, stemming from a split within the party, has garnered significant attention as it pertains to the fundamental aspects of party identity and representation.

A crucial hearing took place on Thursday, March 14, addressing the contentious issue of party symbol and name within the NCP. During this session, the faction led by Sharad Pawar raised objections against the usage of his photograph by Ajit Pawar’s group. Responding to the court’s directive, Ajit Pawar’s party assured on March 16, through a submitted affidavit, that they would refrain from using Sharad Pawar’s photo henceforth.

Today’s hearing holds immense significance as it may deliver another blow to Ajit Pawar’s group. Despite the Central Election Commission reinstating the party’s original symbol, a clock, to the Ajit Pawar faction, the court had earlier suggested considering an alternative symbol to avert confusion. The looming Lok Sabha elections intensify the stakes, with speculations rife that a symbol change could adversely impact Ajit Pawar’s electoral prospects.

The prospect of a symbol change raises pertinent questions about the identity and recognition of Ajit Pawar’s group. Since its inception, the clock has been synonymous with the NCP, making a potential shift a challenging endeavor. The impending decision by the court holds the potential to reshape the political landscape for both factions as they gear up for the upcoming elections.

The legal battle originated when the Sharad Pawar group contested the Election Commission’s decision to grant the party name and symbol to the Ajit Pawar faction. Following a court directive, Sharad Pawar’s group was allocated the trumpet as its symbol on February 22. With the next hearing scheduled for today, March 19, all eyes are on the Supreme Court as it navigates the intricacies of this high-stakes dispute within the NCP.
