Shiv Sena Leader Datta Dalvi Arrested for Abusing Chief Minister in Public Meeting

Former Mumbai Mayor Detained by Bhandup Police; Thackeray Group Workers Gather Outside Police Station

November 29, 2023: In a recent turn of events, Datta Dalvi, the former mayor of Mumbai and leader of the Shiv Sena Ubatha group, has been arrested by the Bhandup police. The arrest follows allegations of Dalvi abusing Chief Minister Eknath Shinde during a public meeting. The Bhandup police acted swiftly after receiving a complaint filed by Bhushan Palande, the sub-divisional head of Shiv Sena Shinde group.

The incident took place during a public meeting organized by the Shiv Sena Ubatha group in Bhandup, where Dalvi not only criticized Chief Minister Eknath Shinde as the ‘Hindu heart emperor’ but also used abusive language against him. The complaint alleges that Dalvi’s remarks were not only objectionable but also constituted insults against a person holding a constitutional post.

A case has been registered against Datta Dalvi under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 153(a), 153(b), 153(a)(1)C, 294, 504, and 505(1)(c). This marks the second case registered against Chief Minister Eknath Shinde for objectionable statements, with the Bhandup police conducting a thorough investigation.

Following Dalvi’s arrest, members of the Thackeray group, to which Dalvi belongs, gathered outside the Bhandup police station. Among those present was Thackeray group MP Sanjay Raut, who expressed his stance on the matter. Raut questioned the arrest, citing previous instances where political figures had made controversial statements without facing legal consequences.

Dalvi, in his defense, stated, “If it was Anand Dighe, these traitors would have been whipped. What did he say wrong?” He argued that the use of a certain word in his speech was inspired by a movie scene and questioned the government’s selective action against him.

The incident has sparked debates on freedom of expression and selective application of the law. Meanwhile, the Shiv Sena Ubatha group continues its activities, organizing a public meeting for Konkan residents in North East Mumbai, despite the controversy surrounding Datta Dalvi’s arrest. The situation remains dynamic as the Bhandup police delve deeper into the investigation, considering the broader implications of the case.
