These drones were attempting to launch an attack on the vital bridge that links Russia to the Crimean Peninsula, annexed by Moscow in 2014. In Donetsk, an eastern Ukrainian city under Russia-backed separatist control since 2014, four people were wounded in Ukrainian shelling. The Ukrainian military reported a surge in Russian missile strikes, airstrikes, and rocket launcher attacks in the preceding 24 hours.
Southern Ukraine also witnessed violence, with casualties reported in Kherson and the Sumy region. In Kryvyi Rih, anti-aircraft defense successfully thwarted an attack, though details remained undisclosed.
U.K. military officials expressed concerns about Russia’s forces possibly being divided as Ukraine made advances in the Orikhiv axis. Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar confirmed progress in the Zaporizhzhia region.
Amid these developments, Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to host Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan for talks in Sochi next week. This meeting follows the breakdown of a deal brokered by Ankara and the U.N., which allowed Ukrainian grain to reach global markets despite the ongoing 18-month war.
