Teen chess sensation's journey to the Candidates Tournament marked by triumph and support from family.

New Delhi, August 25, 2023 In a thrilling turn of events at the FIDE World Cup, R Praggnanandhaa, the 18-year-old chess prodigy, has earned his place in the prestigious Candidates Tournament. The prodigy’s remarkable performance has drawn attention not only for his remarkable skill but also for the unwavering support of his mother, R Nagalakshmi.

Nagalakshmi, beaming with pride, shared her joy about her son’s achievement. “We are extremely happy that he came this far in the tournament. And more than that, we are elated to see him seal his berth for Candidates,” she said. However, she also acknowledged that despite the achievement, her son still has a ‘long way to go’.

The Candidates Tournament holds immense significance as it paves the path for a contender to challenge the reigning world champion. Praggnanandhaa’s journey in the FIDE World Cup, held in Baku, concluded with a heartrending defeat against World no.1 Magnus Carlsen in the tie-breaker, ending his sensational run.

Praggnanandhaa’s journey to the final was marked by impressive victories, notably his come-from-behind 5-4 triumph over compatriot Arjun Erigaisi in the quarterfinals. This victory set the stage for a gripping semifinal showdown against Italian-American Grandmaster Fabiano Caruana, ranked third in the world.

The mother-son duo’s journey garnered attention on social media, with Nagalakshmi’s images going viral as her son’s success in Baku coincided with her becoming an unwitting focus of attention. “I was so engrossed in thinking about Praggnanandhaa during the quarterfinals that I didn’t even notice they clicked those pictures,” Nagalakshmi revealed.

Among the heartwarming moments during this journey was a surprise call from Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin. Nagalakshmi shared, “We also got a surprise call from our Chief Minister. It was an overwhelming moment because when he called, it was very late in the night, but he still managed to find time to wish Pragg.”

As Praggnanandhaa prepares for his next endeavor, leaving for Germany from Baku and returning to India on August 30, his remarkable journey continues to inspire aspiring chess players and admirers around the world.
