Madhya Pradesh Assembly Elections: BJP and Congress Face Off in High-Stakes Battle

Elections for 230 Legislative Assembly seats in Madhya Pradesh set to take place in the next two months.

Bhopal | October 02, 2023: In the upcoming two months, assembly elections are set to unfold in five states across India, including Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and Mizoram. While Congress holds the reins in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, the BJP currently governs Madhya Pradesh, with the Bharat Rashtra Samithi in power in Telangana. With the elections looming, all eyes are on Madhya Pradesh, where the BJP is making a concerted effort to retain power.

Two recent opinion polls have shed light on the impending political showdown in Madhya Pradesh. One poll suggests that Congress may seize control, while another conducted by a different organization predicts a BJP victory.

Presently, Madhya Pradesh is under the governance of the BJP, led by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. However, the 2018 elections saw Congress emerge victorious, only to later lose its grip on power due to defections among the party’s MLAs. Heading into this year’s elections, former Chief Minister Kamal Nath leads the Congress party. The opinion polls paint a picture of a fierce battle between the BJP and Congress, leaving the final outcome to the voters.

According to a survey conducted by Times Now, a prominent English news channel, the state is heading towards a closely contested electoral battle. Both the BJP and Congress are expected to garner nearly 42 percent of the votes. Congress is projected to secure between 118 to 128 out of the 230 available seats, with a vote share of 43.80 percent, while the BJP is likely to clinch 102 to 110 seats based on a vote share of 42.80 percent.

An alternative survey conducted by News 24 and PEACS media also foresees a fierce contest between the BJP and Congress, with both parties potentially nearing the majority mark. According to this survey, the BJP could secure 115 to 122 seats out of the 230 available in Madhya Pradesh, while Congress is predicted to claim 105 to 115 seats.

Furthermore, it is noteworthy that Congress seems to be gaining ground in areas where Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ has made its presence felt, adding another layer of intrigue to this high-stakes electoral battle.
