October 16, 2023: In a remarkable display of India’s prowess in space technology, ISRO Chief S. Somnath has captured international attention with his unwavering commitment to India’s space exploration program. During a recent interaction at a program organized by the APJ Abdul Kalam Foundation, he recounted a fascinating encounter with NASA scientists that took place during preparations for the Chandrayaan-3 mission.

NASA, known for its cutting-edge space missions, sent a delegation of scientists to the ISRO headquarters. What they witnessed left them in awe – the remarkable technology developed by Indian scientists for the Chandrayaan-3 mission. Somnath, speaking at the event, revealed how NASA scientists expressed amazement at the cost-effective technology employed by ISRO, aimed at exploring the Moon’s South Pole. In fact, their astonishment led to an intriguing proposal – they suggested that ISRO should consider selling this technology to the United States.

Somnath shared his perspective on India’s growing prominence in space exploration during his interaction with students. He emphasized that India’s capabilities in designing top-notch equipment and rockets have not gone unnoticed on the global stage. In his words, “Our level of knowledge and intelligence places us among the best countries in the world. India is poised to become a powerhouse nation and a leader in technology.”

Dr. Somnath’s account of the NASA team’s visit to ISRO headquarters shed light on their admiration for Indian ingenuity. He mentioned how a group of 5-6 experts from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory visited ISRO to discuss the technology behind Chandrayaan-3. Their response was nothing short of praise, with the NASA delegation expressing their inability to comprehend how ISRO had developed a high-performance device at such an economical cost. Their proposal to acquire this technology for the United States left many intrigued.

As a touching tribute to India’s former President, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, whose 92nd birth anniversary was celebrated in Rameswaram, Dr. Somnath conveyed his immense pride in India’s space achievements. He reminisced about the time he had worked closely with Dr. Kalam during his tenure at ISRO, recounting the valuable advice and encouragement he received from the rocket scientist turned President of India.

Somnath’s words echo a sentiment of unwavering determination and confidence in India’s future as a spacefaring nation. With Chandrayaan-3 poised for a remarkable mission and the world’s attention focused on India’s space capabilities, the country is undoubtedly making great strides in the field of space exploration.
