India’s Resounding Victory in ICC World Cup Puts Rohit Sharma in Record Books

India's win against Afghanistan not only secured their place in the World Cup but also set several records

New Delhi | October 12, 2023: In a spectacular display of cricketing prowess, Team India secured a resounding victory against Afghanistan in the ICC World Cup. Their triumph not only earned them a prime position on the points table but also saw numerous records tumble. Led by their captain, Rohit Sharma, who played a stormy inning, India chased down Afghanistan’s 272-run target in just the 35th over with two wickets to spare. Rohit Sharma’s sensational century was the highlight of the match.

The records set by Captain Rohit Sharma in the match against Afghanistan have been the talk of the town, but it’s not just the skipper who made history. The Indian team achieved a significant milestone by successfully chasing more than 250 runs for the seventh time in World Cup history, a feat unparalleled by any other nation. Other teams have managed to accomplish this only five times.

Another feather in India’s cap is their run rate during the chase, which stood at 7.8, a record in itself. No team has ever won with such a high run rate while chasing more than 250 runs in World Cup history.

Moreover, India notched up their second-highest power play score against Afghanistan, amassing 94 runs in the first ten overs, narrowly missing their 2012 record of 97 for 2 against Sri Lanka.

Rohit Sharma’s performance in this match also earned him his seventh century in the World Cup, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s record of six centuries. Notably, Rohit’s seven centuries have come against six different countries, while Sachin’s six were against five.

Rohit Sharma’s 131 runs in this match placed him fifth on the list of highest individual scorers in a run chase in World Cup history, with four of the top six coming from this year’s World Cup matches:

  1. Devon Conway – 152 not out against England, 2023
  2. Lahiru Thirimane – 139 not out against England, 2015
  3. Stephen Fleming – 134 not out against Africa, 2003
  4. Mohammad Rizwan – 131 not out against Sri Lanka, 2023
  5. Rohit Sharma – 131 against Afghanistan, 2023
  6. Sachin Tendulkar – 127 not out against Kenya, 1996

Rohit Sharma also etched his name in history by holding the record for the most centuries scored while chasing runs in the World Cup. Rohit boasts three centuries while batting in the second innings, a feat unmatched by anyone else. Previous cricketers who achieved this feat twice include Gordon Greenidge, Rameez Raja, and Stephen Fleming.

Furthermore, in the first 10 overs of the match, Rohit Sharma’s 76 runs made him the second-highest run-scorer, just behind Brendon McCullum’s record of 77 against England in 2015 and ahead of Kushal Mendis’ 72 against South Africa in 2023.

This impressive victory against Afghanistan also became India’s fourth biggest run chase in World Cup history, following their successful chases of 288 runs against Zimbabwe in 2015 and 275 runs against Lanka in 2011. India’s cricketing prowess continues to shine brightly on the global stage.
