Hope Emerges for Maratha Reservation: Supreme Court Accepts Curative Petition

December 23, 2023: In a significant turn of events, petitioner Vinod Patil is optimistic about the acceptance of the curative petition related to Maratha reservation by the Supreme Court. He anticipates a positive decision soon, bringing potential relief to the Maratha community in the ongoing battle for reservation rights.

The Maratha community’s entitlement to reservation in education and employment, initially endorsed by the Bombay High Court, faced a setback when the Supreme Court revoked this privilege in 2021. In response, the government promptly filed a curative petition, seeking a reconsideration of the decision.

Vinod Patil has asserted that the Supreme Court has accepted the curative petition, marking a crucial step forward. The case is scheduled for a hearing on January 24, where four judges, including the Chief Justice, will deliberate on the matter. Patil views this acceptance as a beacon of hope, indicating the possibility of a favorable resolution.

However, amidst this optimism, Manoj Jarange Patil, a prominent leader in the Maratha reservation struggle, remains steadfast in pushing for reservation under the OBC category. He insists on extending certificates to relatives with Kunbi records, a demand met with resistance from the state government, citing impracticality.

In response to the government’s apparent reluctance, Jarange issued a 24-day ultimatum for a decision. Despite the impasse, the Chief Minister has committed to addressing the reservation issue in February. In light of this, Jarange is set to determine the course of the next movement and unveil his stance during a crucial meeting in Beed on Saturday.

The unfolding developments in the Maratha reservation case underscore the ongoing struggle for equitable representation and access to opportunities, with both hope and tension characterizing the path ahead.
