Historic Unveiling of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s Statue at Supreme Court on Constitution Day

President Draupadi Murmu and Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud to Unveil Monumental Statue on November 26

New Delhi | November 25, 2023: In a historic moment marking Constitution Day on November 26, the Supreme Court of India is set to unveil a monumental statue of Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution. This will be the first time in independent India’s history that the Supreme Court premises will house a statue of Babasaheb Ambedkar, adorned in the attire of a lawyer, holding a copy of the Constitution. The seven feet tall statue, sculpted by renowned artist Naresh Kumawat, will be inaugurated by President Draupadi Murmu and Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud.

The statue installation, located on the front lawn and garden of the Supreme Court, symbolizes a significant addition to the nation’s legal heritage. It serves as a tribute to Dr. Ambedkar’s pivotal role as the first Law Minister of independent India, carrying out dual responsibilities as the Chairman of the Constitution Committee. Dr. Ambedkar held the position of Law Minister from September 1947 to October 1951, playing a crucial role in shaping India’s legal framework.

The demand for Dr. Ambedkar’s statue within the Supreme Court premises gained momentum last year when three lawyers wrote to Chief Justice DY Chandrachud. In response to the growing demand, the Supreme Court Arguing Counsel Association (SCACA) also advocated for the installation of the statue. The decision to erect the statue was finalized in December last year, and the sculpting process by Naresh Kumawat commenced in Haryana.

The statue’s completion, currently in its final stages with around 50 laborers working on the platform, adds a significant cultural and historical dimension to the Supreme Court complex. This initiative not only honors the legacy of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar but also underscores the importance of his contributions to the legal and constitutional framework of the country.

As the nation celebrates Constitution Day, the unveiling of Dr. Ambedkar’s statue at the Supreme Court stands as a symbol of reverence for the visionary leader’s enduring impact on India’s legal and constitutional evolution.
