Farmers’ ‘Chalo Delhi’ Movement: Bharat Bandh Disrupts Rural India

Rural Bharat Bandh sees thousands of farmers march towards the capital in fourth day of protest

February 16, 2024: The ‘Chalo Delhi’ movement, led by protesting farmers, has led to a nationwide agitation entering its fourth day. Thousands from Punjab, led by Samyukt Kisan Morcha, have called for a Rural Bharat Bandh from 6 am to 4 pm. This has disrupted several services and industries in rural India, with Rakesh Tikait calling it an ‘ideological bandh’.

Effects of Bharat Bandh:

The Rural Bharat Bandh has resulted in the closure of communication facilities, agricultural activities, MGNREGA works, rural offices, and shops. However, exceptions are in place, ensuring operations for ambulances, newspapers, weddings, medical dispensaries, and board exams remain unaffected.

Minimal Impact on Banking and Transport:

While banks are set to continue operations, the bandh is expected to impact traffic in Delhi and surrounding areas due to the ongoing farmer protests. This has not led to school closures, ensuring educational activities are not hindered.

Demands of Farmers:

The protesting farmers seek legal guarantees on Minimum Support Price (MSP), more effective MGNREGA implementation, restoration of the old pension scheme, and social security for all laborers. Rakesh Tikait, the prominent farmers’ leader, ensures that future decisions will not disrupt national highway traffic.

In conclusion, the Rural Bharat Bandh serves as a manifestation of the ongoing struggle between farmers and the government, as the former demands greater support and security for the agrarian sector.
