Devendra Fadnavis Reveals Secret Discussion with Sharad Pawar on Maharashtra Government Formation

The mysterious early morning swearing-in of Ajit Pawar and Devendra Fadnavis in 2019 continues to raise questions.

October 05, 2023: In a surprising revelation, Devendra Fadnavis, the former Chief Minister of Maharashtra, has shed light on a clandestine discussion he had with Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) President Sharad Pawar regarding the formation of the state government after the 2019 assembly elections. The episode, which saw Ajit Pawar and Devendra Fadnavis taking oaths in the wee hours of the morning, has remained a subject of intrigue.

Devendra Fadnavis disclosed, “Shiv Sena declined to support our party in forming the government in 2019, creating uncertainty over who would come to power. At that juncture, Sharad Pawar reached out to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and proposed a coalition between the NCP and BJP to establish the government in Maharashtra. He even suggested the imposition of President’s rule in the state for a brief period to facilitate discussions among NCP members regarding the alliance with the BJP. However, after extensive negotiations, Sharad Pawar eventually withdrew his support.”

In response to Fadnavis’s revelation, Sharad Pawar stated, “During that time, the BJP held the majority in the assembly with more seats than any other party. They were the ones in power, and it was their prerogative to decide the course of action. If they had the majority, why did they consult me, and why did they consider imposing President’s rule?”

Devendra Fadnavis further claimed that Sharad Pawar had been engaged in discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the political developments in Maharashtra. In reaction to this assertion, Sharad Pawar refuted the claim, stating, “This information is incorrect. The pertinent question remains, why were they seeking my counsel when the BJP clearly had the majority?”

The revelations by Devendra Fadnavis have sparked renewed debate over the events that transpired in Maharashtra in 2019, leaving the public with more questions than answers about the early morning swearing-in ceremony of Ajit Pawar and Devendra Fadnavis.
