Devendra Fadnavis Affirms BJP’s Plan to Make Ajit Pawar Chief Minister for 5 Years

Fadnavis Debunks 6-Month Proposal, Asserts Eknath Shinde's Leadership

October 05, 2023: In a recent address to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers, Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, made a significant announcement concerning the political landscape in the state. Fadnavis proclaimed that the BJP intended to see Ajit Pawar, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and the current second deputy chief minister of Maharashtra, become the Chief Minister for a full 5-year term at an opportune time.

This revelation comes after months of speculation and discussions within political circles regarding the possibility of Ajit Pawar ascending to the role of Chief Minister. Since May when Ajit Pawar’s faction joined Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s government along with the BJP, there have been persistent rumors of this impending change in leadership.

During an interview with India Today, Fadnavis addressed questions surrounding Ajit Pawar’s previous statements, where he had expressed a desire to lead for a brief 6-month period. When asked if there were any assurances regarding this, Fadnavis responded, “The first thing is that some things do not change in 6 months. If we do, we will make him (Ajit Pawar) Chief Minister for a full 5 years.” This statement signifies the BJP’s intention to give Ajit Pawar an extended opportunity to lead the state.

Fadnavis further clarified, “Whenever the opportunity arises… I am telling you clearly that Eknath Shinde is the Chief Minister.” This statement reaffirms the current Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s position and dismisses any notion of an imminent change in leadership, whether it be due to Lok Sabha or Legislative Assembly elections.

In sum, Devendra Fadnavis’ recent statement has brought clarity to the political landscape in Maharashtra, highlighting the BJP’s plan to make Ajit Pawar the Chief Minister for a substantial 5-year term, while emphasizing the steadfast leadership of Eknath Shinde.
