Canada Retreats from Aggressive Stance as India-Canada Dispute Eases

The tension between India and Canada over the Khalistani terrorist case shows signs of resolution.

In a significant turn of events, the ongoing dispute between India and Canada, sparked by the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, appears to be de-escalating. The tension that had gripped both nations for the past few days is gradually giving way to a more diplomatic approach. This internationally discussed case saw major decisions and charges filed against it, with India consistently taking a firm stance.

Canada, initially expressing its anger towards India, has now taken steps towards reconciliation. Observing India’s unwavering resolve in the background of this dispute, Canada has taken proactive measures to diffuse the situation. Notably, Canada has swiftly relocated a significant number of its ambassadors from India in response to India’s ultimatum, which required a reduction in the number of Canadian diplomats by October 10.

The conflict ignited when Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar was shot dead in Canada in June, prompting India to call for a reduction in Canada’s diplomatic presence. The situation escalated when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made statements in Parliament, implicating Indian spies in the incident. India vehemently condemned Trudeau’s remarks, leading to a rapid deterioration of relations between the two nations. As a consequence, India suspended visa facilities for Canadian citizens, and cautionary advisories were issued for future travelers to Canada.

India’s demand for a reduction in the number of Canadian ambassadors posted in the country amid the escalating dispute has led to significant developments. India has issued a warning that failure to comply with this request would result in the removal of diplomatic immunity for the Canadian ambassadors. In response, Canada has swiftly transferred nearly 41 of its ambassadors to various other countries, signaling a willingness to mend diplomatic ties.
